Cyber Safety: Session One

WV Technology Standards state:
Ø      21C.0.3-4.3.TT.4   Student complies with county acceptable use policy.  Students identifies the need for acceptable use policies (AUP), discusses basic issues related to responsible use of technology and information, describes personal consequences of inappropriate use and begins to cite sources for information found through electronic searches. 

Ø      21C.0.5-0.3.TT.4   Student complies with county acceptable use policy.  Students discusses legal and ethical behaviors related to acceptable use of information and communication technology (e.g. privacy, security, copyright, file-sharing, plagiarism) and predicts the possible effects of unethical use of technology (e.g. consumer fraud, intrusion, spamming, virus setting, hacking) on the individual and society, as well as identify methods for addressing these risks. 

Ø      21C.0.9-12.3.TT.4  Student adheres to acceptable use policy and displays ethical behaviors related to acceptable use of information and communication technology (e.g. privacy, security, copyright, file-sharing, plagiarism); student predicts the possible cost and effects of unethical use of technology (e.g. consumer fraud, intrusion, spamming, virus setting, hacking) on culture and society; students identifies the methodologies that individuals and businesses can employ to protect the integrity of technology systems.

Three Online Concerns:

1. Cyberbullying: the use of e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, pagers, cell phones, or other forms of information technology to deliberately harass, threaten, or intimidate someone.
** A bully can hide his/her true identity behind an electronic veil
** Can include acts of threats, insults, racial or ethnic slurs, spreading virus files
** More aggressive actions than what the bully might display in a face-to-face situation (you can't see me and I can't see you!)
** Posting false information to humiliate another
2. Cyberstalking: is the use of the Internet or other electronic means to stalk someone.

** A form of mental assault
** Try to damage the reputation of their victim
** Target victims by using search engines, online forums, chat rooms, emails, etc.

3. Identity theft:  The crime of stealing someone's personal, identifying information for the purpose of using that information fraudulently.  http://idtheft.about.com/od/glossary/g/Define_IDTheft.htm

Tips for Cyber Safety:
    *Keep your password private!
    *Keep your personal information personal. That means do not give out your name, address, social security number to anyone online.
    *Be very careful what you put online-it can never be erased.
    *Never plan to meet someone in person that you met online.

    AUP
      Most schools and counties have their own AUP-acceptable use policy. This policy is used to clarify what is acceptable and what is not, while working online at school. The information must be educational and have an intent for academic achievement. Material may not be copyrighted, threatening, abusive, or obscene. Use of school email is strictly used for professional business only. Schools must enforce their acceptable use policies. 

      Example of Cyberstalking: 
        One woman's ex-boyfriend knew her passwords, mother's maiden name, and other important information and was cyberstalking her. She didn't realize it until it was too late.  She was without a job, a good credit score, and all of her money.  To read more about her story, please see:

McGruff also has a program parents can install of their computer that can safeguard children against certain websites, social networking sites, chat rooms, and even emails.
